The rock sanctuary near Voynovo is the northernmost of the five rock sanctuaries along the Taban River (Malak Kanaggol), forming a Thracian rock cult center dedicated to the Thracian-Getic god Zalmoxis. 3 km south of here is the central cave temple of Zalmoxis called “Badzhaliya” near the village of Strelkovo. The remaining three sanctuaries are on the rocky banks of this dry riverbed, about 1 km south opposite the village of Vasil Levski, 5 km south to the village of Pop Rusanovo and 7 km south to the village of Kutlovitsa, Silistra Region.

Here, cult practices were carried out in the difficult-to-reach cave and the rock shelter, at the foot of which Thracian and Roman ceramics were discovered. The sanctuary arose around the 6th century BC and was abandoned in the 4th century AD, when Christianity began to be imposed in the region. During the era of the First Bulgarian Kingdom, Old Bulgarian hermit monks lived in the cave north of the sanctuary, carving drawings and graffiti on the rock.
