The “Srebarna” reserve was described by Hungarian traveler Felix Kanitz as the Eldorado of marsh birds. He connects its beauty with the legend of the lost “Golden City”. The reserve is near the village of Srebarna, 2 km from the Danube River and 16 km west of the town of Silistra. The reserve is a world cultural heritage. Over 220 species of birds nest in the lake, including many rare and endangered species such as the glossy ibis, the Dalmatian pelican and the little cormorant. The animal diversity is represented by 41 species of mammals, 24 species of fish, 11 species of reptiles and 10 species of amphibians. The central part of the lake is covered with water grass, whose silver reflections, on clear moonlit nights, give the name to the reserve.
