The Daskalovitsa is the first class school in Bulgaria. It was opened in the town of Elena in 1843 by the educator Ivan Momchilov. In 1848, Petko Slaveykov, as a teacher at this school, called it “Daskalolyvnitsa” – similar to a candle-casting house, called “to cast teachers”. The building itself is two stories high, built of stone and wood. On the ground floor are three large rooms, most likely used as shops.
This complex consists of three museum sites open for visits: Kamburov Khan, a 19th century town named after its owner Stoyan Kambura. Here you can find an ethnographic exhibition presenting agriculture, animal husbandry and traditional crafts from the Bulgarian National Revival period. St. Nicholas Church is the oldest church in the area, built in the 19th century after the fire in 1800. It is modest on the outside, but richly decorated with icons and ornaments on the inside. The church is a national cultural treasure. Daskalolivnitsa Primary School – founded in 1843 by Ivan Momchilov and the first school for training teachers in Bulgaria. The school building has been restored and is now a museum presenting the history of Elena and Christian art from the 19th century.
You can find curators and tour guides at the “Gunevata Kashta”, opposite the church of “St. Nicholas”. The complex also has an active church of “Assumption of the Most Holy Theotokos”.
