The Great Basilica in Pliska is a religious and palace complex, including a basilica, an archiepiscopal palace and a monastery, located near the National Historical and Archaeological Reserve “Pliska”. It was completed around 875 and is one of the largest basilicas in medieval Southeastern Europe.

The complex is an important monument of early medieval Bulgarian culture from its Christian period – from the second half of the 9th to the middle of the 11th century. For about 250 years, it served as a cathedral and a princely, episcopal and monastery church, and was the center of the spiritual and religious life of the capital Pliska and early medieval Bulgaria. It is surrounded and protected by a stone wall with battlements over 4 m high.

The basilica was 99 meters long and 29.5 meters wide. It was formed by two almost equal parts – an atrium and a church proper. The main entrance to the church in the western part of the atrium was decorated very solemnly.
